The Elliott Scheirman: End Taxes on Overtime Hours Proposal

"Now that we are trying to rebuild our economy after the devastating effects of COVID-19, it's more urgent than ever that we reward hard work. I propose that we end ALL federal taxes on overtime hours."

Background: The government passed the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) which determined that all business owners with non-exempt employees must pay a rate of at least time and one-half of their regular rates.

Problems: Since many employers can not afford time-and-half pay, this has restricted many employees from working overtime when they urgently need it. For the employees that are actually given the opportunity to work overtime hours, they are now taxed on those hours at the higher rate.

My Solution: No federal taxes on overtime hours.  Yes - it's that simple.
